About this tour

We leave from Beach Križa and follow the south coast of Hvar: Red Rocks, Dubovica, Borče Bay, and the Pakleni channel. At each one the engine goes off and the boat drifts. You get a few minutes of nothing but water and rock before we move on. Two hours, start to finish. Up to 4 people on board, 6 if you need it. The boat is yours for the morning. Over from Split for the day? Tell us when your ferry leaves and we will fit the cruise around it. Departures from 9am to 3pm, and two hours means two hours. You will be back at Križa with time to spare.

The route

Sailing times between stops are averages and vary with sea conditions. Time at each stop adjusts to the group and the day. We do not rush between stops.

Red Rocks

Crvene Stijene
What it is
Iron-red cliffs on the south side of Hvar. The colour comes from iron oxide in the limestone. From the road you cannot see them. From the water they run for a stretch of coast.
What you do here
Engine off, the boat drifts along the cliff face for a few minutes. No landing.
Best conditions
Best in calm conditions or with northerly wind, when the island shelters the coast. Southeast wind (jugo) can send swell against the cliffs.

Dubovica

What it is
A cove with a 16th-century stone house at the edge of the bay. Most photos of Dubovica are taken from the road above. From the boat you see it from the water, which is the other angle.
What you do here
Engine off, drifting in the bay. No landing at the beach.
Best conditions
Sheltered in most conditions.

Žarače

Weather dependent
What it is
A narrow sheltered bay on the south coast, hemmed in by hills. Also written "Zarace" without the diacritic.
What you do here
Engine off, drifting in protected water. No landing.
Best conditions
Sheltered in most conditions.
Occasional stop depending on the sea and the day. Not counted among the four bays on the route.

Borče Bay

What it is
A quiet cove near the village of Milna on the south coast of Hvar, protected from the wind. This is Milna on Hvar island, not Milna on Brač.
What you do here
Engine off, drifting in calm water. This is usually where people stop talking. No landing.
Best conditions
Protected from northwesterly wind (maestral). May get some swell with southeast wind.

The Pakleni channel

What it is
The stretch of water between Hvar and the Pakleni Islands. The clearest water on the route.
What you do here
The boat slows down through the channel for the water colour. Engine off in a sheltered spot before the return leg. No landing on the islands.
Best conditions
Sheltered in almost all conditions. Some current between islands with strong maestral.

    Frequently asked questions

How long is the Scenic Coast Cruise and can I make an afternoon ferry back to Split?

The cruise runs two hours, start to finish. Departures are from 9am to 3pm, so we can fit the cruise around the ferry schedule. Tell us your ferry time when you book and we will give you the departure slot that leaves you back at Beach Križa with time to walk to the ferry terminal.

What is the difference between this and the 4-hour Red Rocks & Pakleni tour?

Different tour, not a shorter one. The Scenic Coast Cruise runs two hours along the south coast with the engine off at each of four bays. The boat drifts, it does not anchor, and there is no landing. The 4-hour Red Rocks & Pakleni tour anchors at Red Rocks, Dubovica and the Pakleni Islands for swimming, snorkelling and a lunch stop. If you want beach time and swimming, book the 4-hour tour. If you want the coast from the water with no swimming, book the Scenic.

Do we stop to swim on the Scenic Coast Cruise?

No. The boat drifts at each bay with the engine off, but it does not anchor for swimming and it does not land anywhere. The route is on the move for two hours. If swimming is what you are after, the 4-hour Red Rocks & Pakleni tour is the one to book.

Can we bring someone with limited mobility?

There is a dock at Beach Križa, so you board from the dock and not from the water. It is not an adapted facility, but the crew helps guests on and off the boat. Once on board you stay seated for the whole two hours. We don't land anywhere, so there is no climbing in or out during the tour. Message us before you book and tell us what the person needs. We'll tell you straight if it works.

How many people fit on the boat?

Up to 6 guests. The base price of €250 is for a group of up to 4. Guests 5 and 6 are €40 each. The tour is private, so the boat is yours regardless of group size.

    What time do you leave?

Departures are any time between 9am and 3pm. You pick the slot when you book. We confirm the time by WhatsApp before the day.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day?

If the sea is up, the skipper may move the route to the sheltered Pakleni side of the coast, or cancel if conditions are unsafe. If MareBoats cancels for weather, you get a full refund. Bookings cancelled by guests are not refunded.

Where do we meet for the Scenic Coast Cruise?

The MareBoats barrel, on the path between Hvar port and Beach Križa, below the Beach Bay Hvar Hotel. About 3 minutes on foot from the ferry terminal, walking towards the Franciscan Monastery.

Can we book the Scenic Coast Cruise the same day?

Same-day booking is possible if a slot is free. Message us on WhatsApp with the time you want and we confirm availability fast.

Is the Scenic Coast Cruise private or shared with other guests?

Private. One group, one boat, one skipper. The base price of €250 is for the whole boat for up to 4 guests.

On board a MareBoats Hvar speedboat

    Shade on every boat

Every MareBoats Hvar speedboat has a sun canopy over the main seating area. The canopy provides shade from the moment you leave the dock to the last stop of the day. All four boats in the MareBoats Hvar fleet carry it as standard.

    Room to move

MareBoats Hvar speedboats are licensed for up to 12 guests but each boat is capped at 8. At 8 guests there is room to settle in and shift positions during the day, and the full group can be in the water at the same time. Groups of 9 to 16 travel on two MareBoats Hvar speedboats sailing together.

    Open deck, no assigned seats

There are no assigned seats on a MareBoats Hvar speedboat. Guests choose where to sit at each stop and can move between the shaded seating area and the open sun during the day.

    Cold water, all day

Every MareBoats Hvar speedboat carries a cooler with ice. Bottled water is included in the tour price and stays available throughout the day.

    Music and snorkel gear

All MareBoats Hvar speedboats have a sound system on board. The playlist has been built over years from what has worked best with guests from every corner of the world. During the tour, guests can join a Spotify Jam and add their own music — you need the Spotify app on your phone. Snorkel masks are included on every tour. No need to bring your own.
